Course Description:

Presentation techniques, from white board to web-based instructional units using currently available software. Emphasis on incorporating the computer as a teaching tool in the presentation of class material. Single Concept Learning Modules (SCLM) are developed. Each SCLM is developed to assist the students in the understanding of a concept. Credit: 3 credit hours.

Course Goals:

· Demonstrate an understanding of oral presentations in teaching.

· Demonstrate an understanding of the different basic learning theories.

· Identify the mastery of those tools needed to teach problem solving.

· Demonstrate an awareness of the usefulness of Single Concept Learning Modules (SCLM).

Schedule:

1 1/16 Orientation, individual topics selection.

2 1/23 Paper on best and worst teaching (10) due before 4:00PM 1/13.

3 1/30 Research paper: Proper use of PowerPoint in teaching (20), due before 4:00 PM 1/20.

4 2/6 PowerPoint presentations in class (20), due before 4:00 PM 1/27.

5 2/13 PowerPoint presentations in class.

6 2/20 Research paper: Multi-media use in teaching (20), due before 4:00 PM 2/10

7 2/27 Multi-media presentations in class (20), due before 4:00 PM 2/17.

8 3/6 Mid-term exam .

9 3/13 Multi-media presentations in class .

3/20 SPRING BREAK

10 3/27 Research paper: White Board teaching (20), due before 4:00 PM 3/9. 3/21

11 4/3 White Board teaching in class (20), lecture notes due before 4:00 PM 3/16.

12 4/10 White Board teaching.

13 4/17 Research paper: Designing a SCLM (20), due before 4:00 PM 4/6.

Best and Worst Teaching: (10)

Write a short report describing the best and worst teaching you have encountered in your college career. The paper should be no more than one page in length and is to be sent as a PDF file attachment to the webmaster before 4:00 PM Friday 1/18 Just describe the best/worst teaching in detail, no course or instructor names are to be included. Research Paper Assignments: (80 )

There are four research papers. Each will be prepared following the format in the handout, and emailed as a PDF file attachment to the webmaster before 4:00 PM on Friday on the date listed Each paper should be three to five pages in length. You must read and rank all papers before class on the following Wednesday. A discussion of each research topic will be held in class. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, PAPER TOPIC.

PowerPoint presentation: (20)

Prepare a PowerPoint slide show presentation that you would use to teach your selected topic. The presentation should be sent as an attachment to the webmaster before 4:00 PM on the date listed. Presentations will be demonstrated in 2/6 and 2/13(20). Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, course and topic should be on the first slide. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, POWERPOINT ( COURSE AND TOPIC). Typically a good PowerPoint slide has six to eight words per line, and about six lines on a slide. Multi-media presentation: (20)

Prepare a Multi-media presentation that you would use to teach your selected topic. The presentation should be sent as an attachment to the webmaster before 4:00 PM on the date listed. Presentations will be demonstrated in 2/27 and 3/6 (20). Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, course and topic should appear first.. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, MULTI_MEDIA ( COURSE AND TOPIC). Typically a good Multi-media presentation might contain animation, video, pictures, and sound. White board presentations: (20)

Prepare a White Board presentation that you would use to teach your selected topic. An outline of your presentation should be sent as an attachment to the webmaster before 4:00 PM on the date listed. Presentations will be demonstrated in class 4/3 and 4/10 (20). Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, course and topic should appear first.. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, WHITE BOARD ( COURSE AND TOPIC). Be sure to write on the board clearly and large enough to be read from the back of the room.

SCLM Presentations: (20)

Prepare a SCLM web page to teach your selected course topic. Web design and content are equally important. . An HTML document should be sent to the webmaster as an attachment before 4:00 PM on the date listed. The attachment must be a zip file with the opening page named index.html. Presentations will be done in class 4/24 and 5/1 (20). Presentations must be done from the course web page. Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, course and topic are the first items that should appear. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, SCLM (COURSE AND TOPIC). Press here to see the submissions.
