Course Description:

Presentation techniques, from white board to web-based instructional units using currently available software. Emphasis on incorporating the computer as a teaching tool in the presentation of class material. Single Concept Learning Modules (SCLM) are developed. Each SCLM is developed to assist the instructor in preparing a lecture, and the students in the understanding of a concept.

Credit: 3 credit hours.

Course Goals:

· Demonstrate an understanding of oral presentations in teaching.

· Demonstrate an understanding of the different basic learning theories.

· Identify the mastery of those tools needed to teach problem solving.

· Demonstrate an awareness of the usefulness of Single Concept Learning Modules (SCLM).

Schedule:

1 1/21 Orientation, individual topics selection.

2 1/28 Paper on best and worst teaching (10) due by midnight 1/25.

3 2/4 Research paper: Prper use of PowerPoint (20) due by midnight Sunday 2/1.

4 2/11 Research paper: Teaching problem solving (20) due by midnight Sunday 2/8.

5 2/18 Research paper: Mulit-media use in teaching (20) due by midnight Sunday 2/15.

6 2/25 PowerPoint presentations in class (20) due by midnight Sunday 2/22. Team 1

7 3/4 PowerPoint presentations in class. Team 2.

8 3/11 PowerPoint presentations in class. Team 3

3/18 SPRING BREAK

Best and Worst Teaching: (10)

Write a short report describing the best and worst teaching you have encountered in your college career. The paper should be no more than one page in length and is to be sent as a PDF file attachment to the webmaster before midnight Sunday 1/25. Just describe the best/worst teaching in detail, no course or instructor names are to be included. The upper left corner of the paper will contain, line one your name, line two your teamnumber. Thesubject line of the email must contain LAST NAME, FIRST, BEST & WORST TEACHING.

Research Assignments : (60 )

There are three research papers. Each will be prepared following the format in the handout, and emailed as an attachment to the webmaster on or before the date listed (10). Each paper should be 4 to 5 pages in length. You must read and rank all papers before class on Wednesday (10). A discussion of each research topic will be held in class. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, PAPER TOPIC.

The three topics are: (1) PowerPoint use in teaching. Due by midnight Sunday 2/1. (2) Teaching problem solving. Due by midnight Sunday 2/8. (3) Multi-media use in teaching. Due by midnight Sunday 2/15.

PowerPoint presentations: (20)

Prepare a self-contained slide show PowerPoint presentation with narration. Your selected course topic is the content. Each presentation should be eight minutes long. The presentation should be sent as an attachment to the webmaster by midnight 2/22 (10). Presentations will be done in class 2/25, 3/4, 3/11 (10). Presentations must be done from the course web page. Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, couse, and topic are the first items that should appear.. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, POWERPOINT ( COURSE TOPIC).

SCLM Presentations: (20)

Prepare a SCLM web page to teach your selected course topic. Web design and content are equally important. You will have eight minutes to present your SCLM. An HTML document should be sent to the webmaster as an attachment by midnight 3/29 (10). The attachment must be a zip file with the opening page named index.html. .. Presentations will be done in class 4/1, 4/8, 4/15. Presentations must be done frrom the course web page. Presentations will be ranked by all. Your name, couse and topic are the first items that should appear. The subject line of your email will contain LAST NAME, FIRST, SCLM (COURSE TOPIC). White board presentations: (20)

Prepare a eight minute demonstration of white board teaching. Your selected course topic is the content. Your presentation will be video taped by the webmaster. Contact the webmaster to arrange a time for taping (10). Presenataions will be done in class on 4/22, 4/29, 5/6 (10). Presentations will be ranked by all. Your session should open with your name, course and topic on the board. All taping must be completed before 4/1.

Exams: (20)

Mid-term and final are each worth 10 points.
