The main function of Bus Interface Unit was to fetch instruction, perform read/write of data and calculate 20-bit address. The Execution Unit decoded and executed the instruction. The 6-byte prefect queue was used to stream the instructions into the EU. This designed can be dimmed as form of what today is known as pipelining.
