Call for Papers
The International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM) is the world's major international conference for software and systems maintenance, evolution, and management. For the 20th ICSM 2004 we invite you to join us in exploring issues related to maintaining, modifying, enhancing, and testing operational systems and designing, building, testing, and evolving maintainable systems.
ICSM 2004 will address the major challenges confronting maintenance and evolution. We will concentrate on identifying new opportunities for collaboration between researchers and practitioners.
RESEARCH PAPERS
Research papers should describe original and significant work in the research and practice of software maintenance and evolution. Research papers may also describe a significant experience in applying software maintenance and evolution technology. Case studies, empirical research, and well-designed experiments are particularly welcome. We also welcome papers that present leading edge and novel ideas in maintenance. Research papers must not exceed 10 pages in final printed form. Submission deadline: March 15 2004.Submit Here
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Proposals for presentations of Industrial Applications are welcome. These can be state-of-the-art descriptions, experience reports, and survey reports from real projects, industrial practices and models, or tool demonstrations. A dedicated sub-committee of the Program Committee will review Industrial Application proposals. A one-page summary of accepted proposals will be included in the conference proceedings. PANELS
ICSM 2004 invites proposals for panel sessions that serve to stimulate discussion about ideas and issues of importance to the software maintenance community. We particularly welcome proposals for highly interactive panel sessions that encourage discussion and debate. Submission deadline: March 30 2004. TOOL EXHIBITIONS
We invite one-page proposal submissions for both commercial and research tools. The proposal should include a description of the tool and its applicability to software maintenance and specify the type of exhibition ("Research Prototype" or "Vendor Tool"). ICSM 2004 will provide accommodations for presenters of accepted tool proposals in the tool exhibition conference room. Presenters are asked to bring their own equipment and are responsible for their own set up. Submission deadline: March 30 2004. Submit by email to Andrea De Lucia "adelucia@unisa.it"
DISSERTATION FORUM
We welcome submissions of researchers that are planning to deliver their dissertation in the next year or have delivered their dissertation (PhD) in the last three years. This forum is for PhD students to discuss their research goals, methods and results at an early stage in their research. It is an opportunity to interact with other students at a similar stage in their careers, established researchers, and the broader software maintenance and evolution community.
Please submit a synopsis of your dissertation and/or the full dissertation in Postscript or PDF. The synopsis must not exceed four pages. Accepted synopses will be included in the conference proceedings and a special Dissertation Forum session will be organized at the conference where you can present your results. TUTORIALS
Tutorials offer an opportunity for practitioners and researchers to get a fast expert introduction to a specific maintenance theme. If you have expertise on specific software evolution methods, techniques, or processes, submit a tutorial proposal to ICSM 2004. Your proposal should include learning objectives, a description of the target audience, intended duration (half day or full day), a content summary, and a brief (50 words max.) curriculum of the teachers. Tutorials will be selected based on relevance, quality, and ability to attract sufficient interest. Two-page descriptions of accepted Tutorials will be included in the Proceedings. ADDITIONAL SPECIAL PUBLICATIONS
There will be a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (http://www.computer.org/tse) featuring extended versions of best papers from ICSM 2004. All papers accepted for ICSM 2004 will be candidates for this special issue. Additional papers featuring empirical aspects of software maintenance will be eligible for a special issue of the Journal of Empirical Software Engineering (http://www.kluweronline.com/issn/1382-3256).

Submissions will be accepted only as Adobe Acrobat PDF or PostScript electronic submission. All submissions must be in English.

Accepted papers and other materials for the Proceedings must be revised to
conform to IEEE style guidelines at http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm.
Templates for submissions are found at ftp://pubftp.computer.org/Press/Outgoing/proceedings.
An author kit will be available after acceptance notification. Revised accepted
papers and materials must be posted on the Computer Society's CS-Press site
no later than 28 June 2004 for inclusion in the Proceedings.
