Assignment 5 - Application Showdown - (Due 9/22, Wed, 6pm):
Assignment:
- Reading: none.
- We will have an application showdown on Thursday, September 23rd.
Please find at least one real-world application of Bayesian Networks
and and one real-world application of Markov Networks. You need to
provide the references (such as the book name and authors, or the
article title and authors, etc) for both of them. Describe the two
applications separately in sufficient detail. Make sure to talk about
what the random variables are (you don't have to list all of them one
by one), which ones are continuous and which ones are discrete, and how
they are parameterized (tables, functions, etc). Turn-in your write-up
by 9/22, Wed, 6pm. You will also asked to present one of the
applications in five minutes in class on Thursday, 9/23.
Presentation Instructions:
- You will be given five minutes to describe only one of the applications in
class on Thursday. You can use the whiteboard, or prepare a
powerpoint presentation, or a mix of the two. Here are the catches:
- We will draw names randomly to figure out the order of the
presentations. Every presenter is given the choice to describe what
he/she wants, unless
it has already been presented by someone else. If what you want to
present has been presented by the previous presenter(s), you will be
asked to present the other application.
- Feel free to prepare a powerpoint presentation (you don't have
to). If you do, keep these in mind:
- Make
sure your presentation is either in PDF or readable by
Openoffice 3.2. We will use only my laptop to save time; either bring
the presentation file on USB or send it to me by email ahead of time.
- If what you want to present is already presented by the
previous presenter(s), then you won't be able to use your powerpoint,
unless of course, you prepare two powerpoint presentations.
