Design and Implementation of Manageability Services
Abstract
Grid services are emerging technologies for the next generation web services. In this presentation I will illustrate the design and implementation of a manageability framework based on Globus Toolkit version 3. Two port types, one for enumerating resource ids and the other for enumerating associated resource ids, are proposed and implemented in the framework. A number of Grid-enabled manageability services are developed for some of the most commonly used Linux resources, including disk partitions, Linux OS, Linux processes, system statistics, and system services. Various service operations and service data elements are implemented to enable manageability functions for underlying resources. Visualization panels are also developed to access these manageability services through the default Globus service browser. The on-demand feature of Grid services distinguishes these services from enumeration based systems in which object instances are often created but never accessed.
Bio of the Speaker
C. Eric Wu received his B.S. from Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University, and M.S. and Ph.D. from Department of Computer Science, Michigan State University. He joined IBM Research in 1987, has published more than 50 technical papers and patents in computer related areas, and received Best Paper Awards at ICPADS '96 and ISHPC '97. He has been leading several research and development projects in the areas of Web-based system management and Web/Grid services since 1999, including a Linux system management framework, CIMOM (Common Information Model Object Manager) providers, and trace generation and multiple Gantt chart visualization for IBM Scalable Parallel systems. Recently he leads a team at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center and developed the package "Manageability Services for Linux", available at http://alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/gems through IBM AlphaWorks. Manageability services are Grid services with sensors and actuators for managing system resources. The package is currently one of the top downloaded packages in the "Grid Computing" zone at IBM AlphaWorks.
