We discuss a model of Grids built in terms of Web Services supported
by a software overlay network. We discuss the implications of this
for integrating Grids and Peer-to-peer networks, (communication) performance, security, fault tolerance and the
support of dynamic lightweight metadata. We describe progress in the Community Grids Laboratory in building core infrastructure to
support this architecture. Applications to Earthquake forecasting and
e-Sports are described.
We relate our work to the ongoing specification of Web Service capabilities
(WS-*) and the OMII (Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute) in the UK.
